In recent weeks I have needed to deal with a small number of Methodist entities that have either NOT supplied a GST return or have supplied a GST return covering a number of months.
The Methodist Church is required by the Goods and services Act to provide the Inland Revenue Department with a monthly GST return covering the correct period. For example, today is the 29 October 2015. Yesterday we were required to lodge the GST return for the Methodist Church for the month of September 2015.
While I appreciate that many people doing this work are volunteers and do the work to the best of their abilities, the Church is still required to follow the law. I would ask you to lodge the GST return in the correct month and by the due date so that we can be assured that the Church meets its legal obligations.
I would refer you to Information Leaflet No. 64 which relates to GST. This can be found on the Methodist Church website (www.methodist.org.nz). A hard copy can also be requested through the Connexional Office.
It’s that time of year again……
Just a reminder that most Methodist entities who are registered with Charities Services will need to have their Annual Returns filed with Charities Services by 31 December 2015.
These can be done online (www.charities.govt.nz) or by sending then a hard copy (hard copy can be found here). It costs more to send a hard copy of the Annual Return so do it online. Remember that you will need to attach your annual accounts with the Annual Return also. At the same time as going your Annual Return, it’s a good idea to check who Charity Services thinks are your officers. If they have them wrong, you are able to update them as part of the Annual Return process. Remember that the Officers of a Parish are the Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Parish Stewards.
If you cannot remember your password, then let either Greer or me know and we will see what we have, otherwise we can get it changed for you. I find that it takes between 10 and 15 minutes to do the return online. If you have any issues, please contact me.
Please note that I need to inform the General Secretary of any entity who has not filed their Annual Return by the 31 December 2015.
Just in case you are still uncertain about which Tier your Parish/Entity are in and what you need to do, here is an article by Craig Fisher on the topic. For most readers you will know the answers to the question (I hope you do by now!!!) but for those who are still uncertain, the article reinforces what the Methodist Church has been implementing.
